The legendary Hippodrome Theatre, reopened as the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center in 2004 as part of a larger revitalization of the West Side of Baltimore, retains the charm and beauty that made the theatre so popular in its earlier days. Now, in keeping with the concept of revitalization and historic preservation, the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center blends the best of the past and present. The “new” Hippodrome features ample parking within a short walk of the theatre, the new Hipp Café and a variety of improvements such as repaved streets and outdoor lighting to make the theatre the centerpiece that it is and deserves to be. Actually created from three existing buildings, The Western National Bank, The Eutaw Savings Bank and the Hippodrome Theatre, the new and improved France Merrick is truly a thing of beauty.
