The American Visionary Art Museum, located in Baltimore’s popular Federal Hill neighborhood, was founded by Rebecca Hoffberger and opened on Friday, November 24, 1995. Ms. Hoffberger remains the museum’s director and notes that the purpose of the museum, in part, is to “crate a place where the best of self-taught, intuitive contributions of all kinds will be duly recognized, explored and then championed in a clear, strong voice.” The Museum is currently undergoing expansion, but currently consists of the main area, which is a 35,000 square foot space that includes an elliptical historic building with new architecture and houses six galleries. Formerly the Four Roses whiskey warehouse, the Tall Sculpture Barn includes 45 foot ceilings that protect massive sculptures housed by the museum. The museum’s Sculpture Plaza is a perfect gathering place for large groups and serves as the central point of the museum.
