The Walters Art Museum is the brainchild of William T. Walters and his son, Henry Walters. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the men assembled a vast collection of artwork as varied as the individual pieces were magnificent. The eclectic collection spanned 55 centuries of artwork, ranging from the works of the European masters to Greek and Roman antiquities, and from the works of ancient Egypt to 19th Century French Impressionism and turn-of-the-century art deco. In all, the two Walters’ collection totaled almost 22,000 individual pieces of art and today the collection has been expanded to over 28,000 objects. Today, the Walters remains a reminder of the past – both of the representative artwork and Baltimore’s history – as well as a modern-day destination.
